Borrowing Basics

The Library makes it easy and convenient for you to place holds, borrow, renew and return your items online and at any community library.

How many items can I borrow?

You can borrow up to 99 items, including up to 30 DVDs and Blu-rays.

How long can I keep library materials?

You can keep books, magazines, CDs, and audiobooks for three weeks, and DVDs and Blu-rays for one week.

How do I renew my items?

You can renew your items:

How many times can I renew my items?

Most items can be renewed up to four times. Interlibrary loans and items on hold for other patrons  cannot be renewed.

How do I place a hold?

You can place a hold on an item at another library in our system by logging into your account. Just find the item in the catalogue and place your hold.

Once your holds arrive at your community library it will available for pick up for seven days and you'll be notified by email, or phone that it's ready for pickup. You can change your notification settings online. You can place up to 50 holds.

You can temporarily pause or deactivate your holds when logged into your account. This is useful when going on vacation, for example, so you don't lose your place on the wait list.

Where do I return my items?

You can return items to our community libraries using the self-check in machine or return chute.

Every community library, including Central Library, has an external book chute for after-hours returns. The return chute for Saddletowne Library at the Genesis Centre and Rocky Ridge Library at Shane Homes YMCA are available when their facilities are open.
