The Library at Your School

Library staff visit schools across Calgary, bringing fun, free programs and resources that support students through their entire school career. Teachers can also visit the Library with their students by attending programs, tours, or participating in Library School. There are also events just for educators held through the year.

Ultimate Summer Challenge School Visit

Grades 1 – 6
25- or 45-minute presentation

Prevent "summer slide" with the Ultimate Summer Challenge, a fun, free program that keeps kids learning every July and August. The Library brings resources, shares books, and builds excitement about this annual learning opportunity to your classroom each spring.

The Library Goes to Kindergarten

Kindergarten
Program length varies

Library staff will engage families at your Kindergarten orientation night, including (by request) through stories, songs, art making, and games.

Kindergarten kids can also receive a special edition Library card, designed just for them by the Children’s Artist/Illustrator in Residence. Nicole Wolf designed the 2019 card.

The Library at Your Event

Grades 1 – 6
Program length varies

Literacy nights, school showcases, year-end celebrations — whatever your event, Library staff can help animate it with a display table and resources to share. Request a Storytime, book talk, or sing-along.

It’s a Crime Not to Read

Grade 3
One hour

Library staff and Calgary Police Service officers visit select schools, as identified by their school board, to read aloud to students and talk about the role of police officers in the community. Students can also use Library books at their school until the next visit.

Info Investigators

Grades 4 – 6
One hour

Students will learn basic online research skills and media literacy by using Library eResources for science and social studies topics. This program is available in October/November and February/March at your school using your laptops or at Library locations using our computers.

Lest We Forget

Grades 5 – 12

Program length varies

Students can uncover the life of a Calgary soldier during the First World War using primary and secondary sources from our local history collections and Library and Archives Canada. This program is offered in schools and at Central Library.
