ESL Teen Talk

Overview

Create a fun environment where ESL teens can become both more comfortable speaking English and more familiar with Calgary’s culture. Meet students in Grades 5 through 9 and lead fun group activities such as board games and Wii that help develop conversational skills. This is a youth volunteer opportunity for Grades 7-12.

Program Goals

Provide a safe and friendly environment for teens to practise their conversational English
Provide an opportunity for youth volunteers to develop mentoring and facilitation skills

Length

Fall / Winter / Spring
1.5-hour programs
Five-week sessions
Dates and times vary depending on location.

Summer
1.5-hour programs
Five consecutive days
Monday to Friday

Volunteer Qualifications

Junior or senior high school students (Grade 7 to Grade 12)
Strong communication skills
Ability to motivate and mentor participants in a youth-centred program
Reliability and a positive attitude
Strong literacy and facilitation skills
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations

Volunteer Responsibilities

Attend a volunteer orientation and training session
Create a positive, fun and rewarding environment for participants
Be a positive role model to participants
Commit to all program dates

Training

An in-person orientation and training session to review program materials
