CBC's The Porter Virtual Screening

Join us for a screening of the new CBC original series The Porter. Set in the 1920s and inspired by history, The Porter follows Black train porters as they pursue conflicting paths to a better life. A Q&A with the creator and directors will follow.

Mental Health of Black Canadians and Black Immigrants in Alberta

Drawing on multiple data sets, this presentation will highlight how racism, income, community belonging and other determinants contribute to the mental health of Black Canadians and Immigrants with a focus on Alberta. Delivered in partnership with the City of Calgary.

Nobody Knows my Name: Alberta, Black History, and the Legacy of "Bickersteeth"

A century ago, an Englishman named John Burgon Bickersteth made a startling discovery in Alberta. A hundred years earlier his great grandfather, Edward Bickersteth, made a very similar discovery in Africa. Between both men is Bertrand Bickersteth. Join him as he pulls these pieces of Albertan, African and personal history together.
