11 Free Resources for Students Heading Back to School

Heading back to school this fall? Check out the free schoolwork help available from Calgary Public Library! Our free programs include in-person and online options for young children, teens, and parents, so there’s sure to be something for everyone. Here’s what we offer:


This online tutoring resource is aligned with the Alberta curriculum for students in Grade 2 to Grade 12. Get expert online help with your homework from 2 pm to 11 pm daily. Support for adult learners is also available.

ELL School Success

In this weekly, in-person program at Forest Lawn, Saddletowne, Country Hills, and Village Square libraries, English Language Learners (ages six to eight) are paired with teen volunteers to learn new words. Presentations are provided for parents on how to support their child's language learning. Register and learn more on our website.

Homework Club For New Canadians

Get help with your homework, practise your English, and improve your grades. This program is for kids and teens from six to 17, and participants must bring homework. In partnership with The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth. Registration is required; learn more on our programs page.

Math Quest

Embark on a math quest! Students ages six to 12 explore the Library while completing fun numeracy challenges that support what they learn in school. Caregivers are invited to stay and play, and all math skill levels are welcome. Math Quest is offered at 18 libraries; find out locations and times on our programs page.

School Support

Students can drop in at the Library with their Math assignments and get help from trained volunteers. Students (ages 10 to 14) will also be connected with digital resources that support school success. No registration is required. School Support: Math is offered at various libraries.

Creative Writing Club

Another in-person program is the Creative Writing Club, for students ages eight to 14. Drop in to play literary games, work on your creative writing, and get help with your school writing assignments. This program is offered in partnership with the University of Calgary, Department of English.


Use this online resource to access course lessons, reviews, and practice tests for students in Grade 3 to 12. Prepare for tests and final exams in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English, through study guides and practice questions aligned to the Alberta curriculum.

Story PALS

Trained Pet Access League Society (PALS) volunteers and their highly socialized dogs provide a calm, accepting presence for struggling readers to practise reading aloud in 15-minute one-on-one sessions. This program, for kids ages six to 12, is offered at multiple libraries. Learn more details and register on our website.

Study Buddy

Study Buddy is a new Digital Resource for kids ages six and up. It allows students to find eBooks and articles by searching multiple Digital Resource at once, including OverDrive for Kids, World Book Kids, National Geographic Kids, Flipster, and Gale Virtual Reference Library. Study Buddy also offers premade searches on popular topics, like Alberta history or nature.


Calgary Public Library has collaborated with Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District to expand our access to TumbleBooks! This online resource offers unlimited access to a collection of eBooks for young children, their parents, and teachers, including more than 250 animated, talking picture books, Spanish and French books, read-along chapter books, non-fiction books, and games.

Welcome to Canada: Academic Success in Junior/Senior High

This two-hour program for newcomers examines the school system in Calgary, including program choices, school fees and rebates, and homework help. It’s offered in partnership with the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth. To register, call 403.230.7745 ext. 201.
