What to Know Before Visiting the Library

What to Know Before Visiting the Library

All 21 library locations are open to in-person visits. Our staff and volunteers are dedicated to ensuring every location is a safe space and that we continue to follow health and safety guidelines. That means there are a few adjustments to how you experience the Library in person. Here is what you need to know when visiting.

Locations are open

The Library reopened all locations at regular hours as of July 20, 2020. The capacity of each location is below 25% so you may have to wait before entering, especially during peak times. The Library encourages seniors and persons with underlying health conditions more susceptible to COVID-19 to visit in the first hour of service. Visit to check the hours of the Library closest to you.

Physical distancing and personal hygiene protocols

The Library has implemented physical distancing and personal hygiene protocols to create a safe and clean environment for staff and the public. Signs are in place throughout each location to help guide you.

When you enter a physical location

Wear a mask. As of August 1, all staff and visitors are required to wear a mask inside Library locations in keeping with the Temporary Face Coverings Bylaw. A single-use mask can be provided to visitors on request.

Clean your hands. Hand sanitizing stations are located at the entrance of all locations.

Limit your visit to 60 minutes. This helps ensure more people can access services. Due to physical distancing and limited access, wait times may be experienced. We appreciate your patience.

When you should NOT visit a location in person

Please, do not visit any Library location if you:

  • have a fever, cough, or other symptoms consistent with COVID-19
  • have travelled outside of the country in the past 14 days
  • have been in contact with a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19

Available in-person Library services

In-person Library services currently available at locations include:

  • Book returns
  • Collection access and checkouts
  • Study space (including reading room study space at some locations)
  • Printing, Wi-Fi and photocopying
  • Desktop and Chromebook access
  • Limited seating
  • Meeting room bookings at some locations. Please check our Book a Meeting Room calendar for availability and note that meeting room capacity is limited.

In-person Library services NOT available yet

While locations are open, certain services may be unavailable or heavily restricted. Some of our services that are not currently available include:

  • In-person events and programs
  • Book donations
  • Third-party room bookings
  • Play materials and structures in Early Learning Centres

How to return materials

During open hours, returns can be made inside the Library. Place your materials in one of the designated return areas for quarantine.

Exterior book return chutes are open outside of Library hours.

All materials will be quarantined for 72 hours before staff can handle them and return them to circulation.

Curbside services and other zero-contact ways to experience the library

If you are unable to visit a location or would prefer not to, the Library has several zero-contact services. Curbside Holds Service, a contactless holds pick-up service, is available at all locations except Rocky Ridge, Nicholls Family, and Sage Hill Libraries. Check for hours of operation for the location of your hold.
