What to Know Before Visiting the Library

Calgary Public Library will begin to gradually reopen locations in multiple phases. As of July 20, all 21 locations are now open during their regular service hours.

The Library will implement Temporary Senior Hours for the first hour of service each day to support seniors and persons with underlying health conditions more susceptible to COVID-19. Please check to check the hours of the Library closest to you. Curbside service continues to be offered at all locations.

All locations will have limited capacity. Please confirm if your location is open and what services are available before visiting.

The Library has implemented physical distancing and personal hygiene protocols to create a safe and clean environment for staff and the public. Watch the video to understand these measures in action.

As of August 1, all staff and visitors are required to wear a mask inside Library locations in keeping with the Temporary Face Coverings Bylaw. A single-use mask can be provided to visitors on request.

Do not visit any Library location if you:

  • have a fever or cough
  • have travelled recently
  • have been in contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19

While some locations may be open, certain services may be unavailable or heavily restricted. Some of our services that are not currently available:

  • In-person events and programs
  • Room bookings
  • Book donations
  • Play materials and structures in Early Learning Centres

In-person Library services currently available at reopened locations include:

  • Printing / copying
  • Desktop computer access (two-hour time limit)
  • Collection access (checkouts / in-location access)
  • Limited seating

Curbside Holds Service, a contactless holds pick-up service is also now available at all locations except Rocky Ridge, Nicholls Family, and Sage Hill libraries. Check for hours of operation.

The Library is encouraging all visitors to:

  • Clean their hands before entering a location. Hand sanitizing stations are located at the entrance of all locations.
  • Limit your visit to 60 minutes to ensure more people can access services.

Due to physical distancing and limited access, wait times may be experienced. We appreciate your patience.

Materials Returns:

Exterior book return chutes are now open, or returns can be made inside the Library during open hours. Please return items to the clearly marked bins inside the location.

To return your materials, enter an open location during operating hours and place your materials in one of the temporary return quarantine areas. All materials will be quarantined for 72 hours before staff can handle them and return them to circulation.

All updates on reopened locations and service changes will be posted at
