Make it Messy: Science

Overview

Help kids, ages 6-12, with hands-on STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities. The program's activities use supplies that children find at home (i.e. baking soda, vinegar, etc.) so that children can re-create the experiments and activities outside the program and reinforce learning. This program is for volunteers ages 15 and up.

Program Goals

  • Provide learning opportunities for children with an interest in science and engineering
  • Help children develop a love of reading through exposure to exciting books and stories

Length

Fall / Winter / Spring / Summer
One-hour program
Six-week sessions once a week, or five consecutive days for one week
Dates and times vary depending on location

Volunteer Qualifications

  • Currently in high school or post-secondary
  • Strong reading and speaking skills in English
  • Positive attitude, reliable, patient, able to stay on task

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Attend volunteer orientation and training session
  • Provide support to participants as directed by staff lead
  • Be a positive role model

A one-hour training and orientation session
