Library to host Star Wars Day on December 2

Calling all wookies, porgs, jedis, and droids to a library not that far away.

November 20, 2017

Calgary, AB — On Saturday, December 2, three Calgary Public Library locations will be transformed for Star Wars Day: The Library Strikes Back. This one-day event — a free all-ages celebration of all things Star Wars — is a special opportunity for Calgarians to mark the upcoming launch of the movie Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Build your own lightsaber, program a droid, or take a selfie with a stormtrooper. Family-friendly cosplay is strongly encouraged as Star Wars mania takes over Central Library (616 Macleod Trail SE), Shawnessy Library (333 Shawville Blvd SE), and Saddletowne Library (7555 Falconridge Blvd NE) from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

“Libraries are gathering places, full of varied resources and relevant programs. Our upcoming Star Wars Day is a fun opportunity for us to bring fans together,” said Heather Robertson, Director of Service Design. “We’re excited to welcome Calgarians of all ages to Central, Shawnessy, and Saddletowne libraries, as partner organizations, Library staff, and volunteers help us make this an afternoon to remember.”

Whether you choose the dark side or the light, the Library will have fun activities for all Star Wars fans:

  • Explore craft stations to create a Star Wars snowflake, build a papercraft porg, or colour an ewok ornament;
  • Pose for a picture with the stormtroopers of the 501st Legion;
  • Meet a life-size R2-D2 at the following times and locations:
  • Learn to program mini versions of the movie droids: R2-D2, BB-8, R2-Q5, and BB-9E;
  • Discover our awesome Star Wars collections including books, graphic novels, and movies;
  • Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality demonstrations hosted by VizworX and the VR/AR Association.

Special thanks to event partners VR/AR Association (VRARA), 501st Legion – Badlands Garrison, Robogals, and Red Deer R2-D2.
