Early Literacy Volunteer Corps


Help foster literacy in your community by sharing early literacy basics with parents and kids up to age five at the Library’s Early Learning Centres.  Volunteers, both singly or in pairs, set up and engage families in early literacy activities, facilitate play activities and clean and organize toys in the space.


Help library staff to create a positive early learning experience for children and parents
Help children improve their self-confidence and creative thinking skills
Help children feel that the library is a fun and safe place to learn and interact with both toys and books
Help parents gain a deeper understanding of early literacy principles and gain skills in helping their children learn through play
Help parents and children have valuable interactions in the library, cementing the parent-child bond and the value of libraries in the community


Fall  Winter  Spring  Summer
Two or three-hour program depending on location
Weekly schedule
Dates and times vary depending on location
At least a four month commitment required


Enjoys interacting with children aged 0 to 5
Comfortable talking with parents
Physically able to bend and stand for extended periods
Outgoing and friendly personality
Background in early childhood education is a benefit


Attend an orientation and training session
Facilitate small group activities
Share basic early learning principles
Encourage safe play, check the play area for safety hazards, and restock play materials
Clean identified toys and return them to their proper location
Be part of a team that creates a positive, fun, and enriching environment for children
Abide by the Volunteer Standards of Conduct


A two-hour training and orientation session

Gain experience in Early Literacy/Early Learning
Meet new people
Have fun and contribute to your community
