Idea Coaching

Overview

Idea Coaching is a registered, volunteer-led, 4-week program hosted in the Central Library’s IdeaLab with different weekly themes.

Volunteers assist patrons in ideation and brainstorming, as well as facilitate the full use of the Idea Lab. Volunteers with an interest in creative thinking or innovation help patrons one-on-one or in small groups to unleash their inner creativity.

Program Goals

  • Provide individuals with knowledge and assistance in creative thinking, brainstorming, and other Idea Lab activities
  • Provide information on the resources available in the Idea Lab
  • Promote the design thinking process and access to self-guided activities and materials
  • Provide social connection for Calgarians embarking on a variety of projects (i.e. starting a business, community engagement, social enterprise, etc.)

Volunteer Qualifications

  • Background or interest in entrepreneurship/small business ventures, design thinking, innovation and/or startups considered an asset
  • Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Inquisitive personality
  • Able to work independently
  • Fluent in English
  • Public speaking skills
  • Enjoys learning new things and sharing their knowledge

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Attend an orientation and training session
  • Guide participants through the phases of design thinking with exercises to help them generate, refine and advance their ideas
  • Help participants learn about the wider ecosystem for entrepreneurs in Calgary
  • Engage patrons and share knowledge both to small groups or one-on-one
  • Interact with stakeholders in a friendly and respectful manner
  • Abide by the Volunteer Standards of Conduct

Training

  • Information Package provided prior to first shift for independent learning
  • On-site orientation provided by community library staff
  • Shadowing experienced Idea Coach for one shift
