Overview
Help an adult with low literacy skills, experience the joys of reading. Volunteer coaches help participants develop basic reading, writing and numeracy skills. A learner-centred method builds upon each person’s needs, strengths, learning styles and life experiences.
Program Goals
To provide one-on-one coaching for adult learners who want to engage in lifelong learning activities
To support adults in achieving their literacy-related goals

Throughout the year
Two hours a week
Volunteer Qualifications
A strong commitment to adult literacy and interest in helping adults learn to read and write
Ability to work independently with a learner
Excellent listening and communication skills
Flexibility, creativity, patience and good problem solving skills
Able to work effectively with diverse populations
Volunteer Responsibilities
Develop and implement individualized learning plans based on the learner’s goals
Develop and maintain learning journals, individualized learning plans and learner portfolio
Commit to participate in the program for a minimum of one year

A one-day training session covering program materials
