Play Champions

Help foster literacy in your community by sharing early literacy basics with parents and kids up to age five at the Library’s Early Learning Centres.  Volunteers, both singly or in pairs, set up and engage families in early literacy activities, facilitate play activities, clean and organize toys in the space, and support staff as needed.

At Central Library, there are three different areas where Play Champions volunteer: Early Learning Centre (preschool-age children), Questionarium (school-age children), and Collaborative Tech Space (school-age children).

Program Goals

  • Help Library staff to create a positive early-learning experience for children and parents
  • Help children improve their self-confidence and creative thinking skills
  • Help children feel that the library is a fun and safe place to learn and interact with both toys and books
  • Help parents gain a deeper understanding of early-literacy principles and gain skills in helping their children learn through play
  • Help parents and children have valuable interactions in the library, cementing the parent-child bond and the value of libraries in the community
