Calgary Public Library has opened Prototype: Skyview, a new space to support the growing community in the northeast. Prototype: Skyview seeks to understand and address unique community needs, while developing new Library services that can benefit the entire Calgary Public Library system.
“We are pleased to see additional Library supports and services in our growing community,” says Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal. “I am happy to see the Library creating new ways to serve our diverse population and invest in digital literacy and supports for Calgarians.”
This innovative service model is based out of a 3,000 square foot retail location at SkyPointe Landing (#1620, 6004 Country Hills Blvd NE) and will focus on digital services and technology access. As a hub for testing and community, this location will contribute to facility planning and directly inform the design of a planned permanent location in the Skyview Ranch area.
“Calgary is growing at an incredible rate and the Library needs to be able to grow alongside our community. Providing accessible and impactful learning spaces is critical to the future success of our city,” says Sarah Meilleur, CEO of Calgary Public Library. “Prototype: Skyview will allow us to test new ideas, meet with community members, and enhance Library service that will not only benefit the Skyview community, but may also inspire opportunities that we can spread across the system to other locations. This is a true prototype.”
Following community analysis and research, Prototype: Skyview will have a focus on digital resources and technology access, as opposed to physical collections. Services and space features include:
“What’s exciting about Prototype: Skyview is that it will continually change and evolve as we operate. We hope community members will come and tell us what they want to see – their voice is a key part of this project,” continued Meilleur.
Skyview Ranch is one of the fastest growing communities in Calgary and includes a diverse population. Multilingual supports are a key area of testing and staff at Prototype: Skyview will speak a combined seven languages, including Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, and English, increasing accessibility to services and enhancing a sense of belonging and welcoming for the community when they come into the space.
Prototype: Skyview was developed with support from The City of Calgary's One Time Funding to support New Community Outreach and Service Strategy.
Calgary Public Library memberships are free for residents and provide access to free programs, courses, printing, Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, and so much more. Visit calgarylibrary.ca/free to explore member benefits and register for your free card.
