LitCon

A Calgary Youth Literary Arts Festival

Discover the Literary Arts

Discover the literary arts with your students. Each year, educators can register their classrooms for free virtual and in-person sessions designed for Grades K – 9. Sessions explore writing, drawing, poetry, music, comics, oral storytelling, and more.

Check back in early 2027 for program details, or sign up for the Educator Newsletter for updates and make LitCon part of your classroom curriculum next spring.

Submit Your Writing to the Short Story Dispenser Contest

Want your writing featured in the Short Story Dispenser at Central Library? We are looking for fiction, poetry, and comics from students 5 – 17. Selected winners’ submissions will be available to print in our Short Story Dispenser over the summer.

General Contest Rules:

  • Content must be family-friendly.
  • Only one submission per category (poetry, fiction, and comics).
  • All work must be submitted ready to be published “as-is.” No editing will be done.
  • Submission must be your own original writing and/or illustrations.
  • Fiction or poetry submissions must not require a specific line layout or indentation.
  • Any submissions that do not follow the contest rules will be disqualified.

Fiction and Poetry: Up to 750 words max/4800 characters including spaces.

Comics: Must use the downloadable template to create your comic and email it as a JPEG file. Comics can only be in black and white (no colour or gray-scale) and are limited to the one-page template. Any comic submissions that do not follow these requirements will be disqualified as they won't print with our Short Story Dispenser.
