Alexander Calhoun Library first opened in 1954. The current building, located just around corner from the 1954 building, opened in 1985 and carried the same name. This original name honoured Calgary Public Library's first Chief Librarian, Alexander Calhoun. The location has become a beloved community hub in southwest Calgary.
Mary and Joe Giuffre moved to Calgary one year after the opening of this location. Joe established a self-storage business and credited Calgary Public Library for developing his family's love of reading and helping his children to achieve their goals in life. The name of the Library was changed in honour of a $1.5 million gift to the Library on behalf of the Giuffre family in 2018.
