Level 1

The Archway connects East Village to downtown.

This gorgeous outdoor thoroughfare creates a pathway for pedestrians to pass over the existing LRT line and venture across the city. The entrance is built with western red cedar, and the wooden soffit’s design is inspired by the chinook arch cloud formations common to Calgary’s skies.

The donor-named Shaikh Family Welcome Gallery is both beautiful and versatile.

Visit the Welcome Kiosk to view Library events or book a meeting room. Drop your return items into the Bookscalator — a giant escalator just for books — and watch the conveyor belt travel up to the second floor. After hours, this space doubles as a space for community celebrations and special events.

Bringing the community together to learn, inspire, and celebrate.

There’s always something new happening in the Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall. This space hosts large events, seminars, conferences, private bookings, and more. At street level, you can see Library programming happening through the large exterior windows.

Indigenous Placemaking in Central Library creates a welcoming environment.

Visitors are greeted by a collaborative wall mural, which focuses on the past, present, and future of the traditional pride within the tribes of Treaty 7. Indigenous people can see their culture reflected, and visitors can learn about the original inhabitants of the land that is now Calgary.
