Al-Karim Khimji Committee Membership: Board Vice-Chair Term End: 2024 Al-Karim remembers the many hours he spent at Louise Riley, Shaganappi, and Signal Hill libraries as a child, reading books that allowed his imagination to wander. He loved getting lost in the story, language, and characters of the many books by Roald Dahl. Those early days of exploration and excitement at the Library were foundational to Al-Karim and his professional and volunteering journey. His appreciation for the Library further deepened as he began to understand the impact the Library has as a safe place of gathering, learning, and collaboration for all ages and members of the community. He looks forward to contributing to the Library's extensive programming and continuing the positive impact it has on the community.

As a young child, she was placed in the Indian Residential School, where she suffered much abuse. She survived that experience and the following years of addiction and violence. In 1974, she experienced spiritual reawakening and chose a healing path. She worked in many helping places until she had the vision to address the legacy of her people, working for many years to establish a shelter for Aboriginal women based on a cultural approach. Ruth ran for the position of MLA in southern Alberta in 1992 for the NDP. She then ran and was subsequently elected as a Band Councillor at Siksika Nation, where she sat for 18 years. In 2014, she released her book titled My Name Is Shield Woman: A Hard Road to Healing, Vision and Leadership. Today, Ruth is a healer, community builder, and Elder. She is currently involved in the issue of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women in Canada. Originally the Forest Lawn Association Library, it was started by a group of engaged citizens and first located in the Bow River School. At the time of annexation, the location had collected more than 152,000 volumes, had 45,000 dedicated borrowers, and an annual circulation of over 867,000! This location has moved many times — first to the Marks Building on 17 Avenue in 1962, then in 1965, to a shopping centre down the road. On July 16, 1973, its current location opened at 4807 8 Avenue SE. Significant renovations were completed in 2004, nearly doubling the size of the location to 10,500 sq. ft. The location is currently the only Library with two Early Learning Centres; the Forest Lawn Library Nature Playground opened in 2017, followed by the indoor ELC, “Explore Energy,” in 2018.
