Family Reading Pick

Join in on a reading adventure with your family

The 2026 Family Reading Pick is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.

Family Reading Pick creates space for families to share in a literary adventure, both through the novel and graphic novel.

Starting January 27, copies will be available at all Library locations, excluding Rocky Ridge and Prototype: Skyview. There will also be activity booklets available with literacy activities and discussion questions.

An adult reads a picture book with two young children who sit close on either side, all three focused on the pages. The scene appears warm and intimate, set against a simple indoor background. An adult and a young child sit together in a library’s children’s section, smiling at the camera. The adult holds an open book, and shelves of colourful children’s books are visible behind them.

Stories bring us closer

Families are encouraged to read this story aloud together.

Reading is a wonderful way to spend time together. It can strengthen bonds while also instilling a love of reading. Even as adults, many of us look back fondly on our parents or caregivers reading us a bedtime story. When families participating in Family Reading Pick grow older, they will have positive memories of reading A Wrinkle in Time together.

Graphic Novel Adaptation

Family Reading Pick also includes a graphic novel version of A Wrinkle in Time

While some may find that a graphic novel is more challenging to read out loud compared to a traditional format, it can be an appealing format for readers of all ages. Artwork helps bring the characters, worlds, and complex themes to life — making the story easier to follow and more engaging for visual readers. Hope Larson’s illustrations are engaging and add a fun element to the reading experience.

Benefits of reading with your family

Make the most of your Family Reading Pick experience with these tips for reading with your family.

You can help your child advance their reading comprehension skills faster by using the dialogic reading technique.

You’re never too old to enjoy being read to

Listening to stories read out loud by others has many benefits. This includes:

  • 85% of children ages six – 14 who have been read aloud to, say they love it! (Kids and Family Reading Report – Scholastic, 2017).
  • Listening to books being read aloud exposes listeners to language, vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar — all useful elements in listening comprehension that can lead to strong reading comprehension skills. (The Read-Aloud Handbook, Jim Trelease, 2013)
  • 57% of kids who are frequent readers have caregivers who can be seen reading five to seven days per week (Kids and Family Reading Report – Scholastic, 2017).
  • Kids ages six – 11 who actively participate in read-aloud time by asking questions, taking turns reading, or making sound effects are more likely than other children to be frequent readers (Kids and Family Reading Report – Scholastic, 2017).
  • Children spend five times as much time outside the classroom as they do in school, so the reading that happens at home and in the community has a big impact (The Read-Aloud Handbook, Jim Trelease, 2006).
