Closing the Book on Our Comeback Story

Every day, more than 20,000 people visit Calgary Public Library locations. Whether you’re using technology, browsing for your next great read, or connecting with others in the community, the Library is a place to gather, learn, and grow.

When a cybersecurity incident in October 2024 put things on pause, the impact was significant. It temporarily left Library users without the spaces, programs, and services that are normally accessible to everyone.

So, we started a comeback and invited you along on the journey. Our Comeback Story began in an analog environment and through each service update or change, you stood by us.

We received many kind messages, including beautiful hand-written notes from Nicholls Family Library patrons — you can read them throughout the chapters below.

Kindness from the community and the outpouring of support truly highlighted the importance of the Library. We were determined to welcome you back.

Chapter 1: The Library Goes Analog...For Now

A hand written thank you note

After a three-day closure in mid-October, the Library’s Comeback Story began in an analog environment with limited technology. However, the community still showed up to use our spaces. Early Learning Centres were filled with children playing. Members browsed the shelves for their next great read and many settled in at tables and chairs to connect with others.

For many in our community, the lack of technology was impactful. Equitable access to technology is one of the most powerful ways that we serve our community. It was important to get these services back as quickly and as safely as possible.

Chapter 2: Making it Work

A hand written note celebrating wi-fi.

Our Comeback Story continued with a steady return of public services. Holds shelves had gotten quite full and these books could now make it to the hands of eager readers. You could also make returns and access your membership account.

Drop-in programs like Family Storytimes and Baby Rhyme Time were busy. Even with some missing services, staff and patrons adapted to changes and made it work.

Dozens of digital resources were available and public Wi-Fi returned to all locations.

Chapter 3: We are Connected!

A hand written note thanking the Calgary Public Library.

Throughout each stage, we felt the power of community. With every service that came back, you helped staff along the way with your positivity and understanding.

Printing is one of the most in-demand services at the Library with 2.3 million print jobs across the system every year. Printing returned, along with meeting room booking and online program registration.

Your support along the way helped us bring back services as quickly as possible.

Epilogue

We are happy to share that the Library has closed the book on Our Comeback Story.

Programs and services are restored and we are excited for the new year ahead. There may still be some bumps in the road as we continue to improve our technology services and find new ways to better serve Calgarians.

Thank you to our staff and visitors for their support, patience and encouragement. We wouldn't have made it here without our wonderful community.

Thank you for being part of Our Comeback Story.
