Play Champions

What will you do?

Help foster literacy in your community by sharing early literacy basics with parents and kids up to age five at the Library’s Early Learning Centres. Volunteers, both singly or in pairs, set up and engage families in early literacy activities, facilitate play activities, clean and organize toys in the space, and support staff as needed.

At Central Library, there are three different areas where Play Champions volunteer: Early Learning Centre (preschool-age children), Questionarium (school-age children), and Collaborative Tech Space (school-age children).

Program Length: Two-or three-hour program, depending on location

Volunteer Qualifications

  • Enjoys interacting with children ages zero to five
  • Comfortable talking with parents
  • Physically able to bend and stand for extended periods
  • Outgoing and friendly personality
  • Background in early childhood education is a benefit

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Attend an orientation and training session
  • Facilitate small group activities
  • Share basic early-learning principles
  • Encourage safe play, check the play area for safety hazards, and restock play materials
  • Clean identified toys and return them to their proper location
  • Be part of a team that creates a positive, fun, and enriching environment for children
  • Abide by the Volunteer Standards of Conduct
