The Wild Robot is the 2025 Family Reading Pick

Go on a literary adventure with Calgary Public Library's Family Reading Pick. This annual program provides resources to help families and classrooms read an engaging book together, build healthy reading habits, and have fun along the way.

The 2025 Family Reading Pick is one you might be familiar with — The Wild Robot.

Copies of The Wild Robot and activity booklets are available at all locations, excluding Rocky Ridge and Prototype: Skyview. Booklets include activities and discussion questions to guide your reading journey. It also includes an art activity that kids can bring back to the Library so it can be put on display — they'll even receive a prize!

Benefits of Reading Together

Reading together as a family is a great way to connect and start bigger conversations about our world and ourselves. According to a Scholastic Kids and Family Reading Report, kids ages 6 – 11 who actively participate in read-aloud time by asking questions, taking turns reading, or even making sound effects are more likely than other children to be frequent readers.

Plus, it's something fun that you can enjoy together. 85 per cent of children ages 6 – 14 who have been read aloud to said they loved it.

The Wild Robot

When a cargo ship sinks in the middle of a hurricane, robot Roz is stranded on a wild island inhabited by unwelcoming animals. To survive, Roz must adapt to her environment and learn to be wild — with a little help from her new friends.

The feature film that was released earlier this year was a box office hit for viewers of all ages. With its recent rise in popularity, as well as its inclusion of important themes like friendship, cooperation, and nature, The Wild Robot was the right fit for the 2025 Family Reading Pick.

Reading The Wild Robot together is a great starting point for your reading journey as a family. Pick up a copy and an activity booklet at a Library location near you and learn more about Family Reading Pick.
